Isopod Chair

The Isopod Chair is a full-size cardboard chaise lounge whose segmented, curving spine is borrowed directly from the body plan of an isopod. It stacks dozens of layered cardboard ribs into a continuous waved surface that supports the back, seat, and extended legs in one sweep — moving from anatomical concept sketches through a ribbed skeletal build to a finished, sit-tested lounge.

I designed this chair around the isopod because its overlapping segments are basically nature’s solution to a flexible-but-rigid spine, which is exactly what a good lounge needs. Sitting in my own full-scale build was the moment the studies paid off — the ribs let the surface follow the curve of a reclined body instead of fighting it. Working only in cardboard forced me to earn every curve through structure rather than upholstery. It taught me that biomimicry is most honest when the creature’s logic actually carries the load.
